Community Profile: James Bay United Church

Located in the heart of James Bay at 511 Michigan Street, James Bay United Church has become much more than a traditional place of worship. While it continues to provide spiritual services and pastoral support, the church also serves as an important community hub offering a wide range of programs and activities that benefit residents of all ages.

The church hosts regular community lunches, wellness programs such as yoga, Qigong and Taiji, arts and music initiatives, community choirs, guitar classes, children's programs, and cultural events including jazz performances and concerts. It also provides space for community art groups, a thrift shop, volunteer opportunities, and social outreach programs that support inclusion and neighbourhood connection.

In addition to its recreational and educational offerings, James Bay United Church is active in social justice, community engagement, reconciliation initiatives, and support for vulnerable members of the community. Through these diverse programs, the church contributes significantly to the social fabric of James Bay by creating opportunities for residents to connect, learn, volunteer, and participate in community life.

The James Bay United Church Thrift Shop:
The James Bay United Church Thrift Shop is in the heart of the neighbourhood.  The Shop is a gathering place where friends, neighbours and newcomers, office and construction workers, young and old meet and visit while they find great items at very reasonable prices. Family news, significant conversations, chats about the weather, the thrill of finding just the right thing, shared bewilderment at the usefulness or beauty of an interesting item - all are part of the buzz of the place. Customers and volunteers come to care about each other and look forward to their weekly connections.

The Thrift Shop is located at 517 Michigan Street, right next to the Church.

Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church:
Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church has become one of James Bay’s most quietly electric weekly rituals—a gathering where music, community, and the warm acoustics of a historic sanctuary converge. Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church proudly presents Juno-nominated and Juno Award-winning artists!

Admission by donation ($20 suggested), but all are welcome regardless of ability to contribute.
